International Trade / WTO

AZB & Partners’ International Trade Law team has built one of the country’s most well regarded practices.

We have a significant depth and range of experience in using international trade rules at national, bilateral and global levels, to resolve market access related disputes between governments and private industry. The Firm’s lawyers have experience with handling complex trade remedial cases for domestic industry and importers before various domestic fora. Additionally, we have established a robust network of accounting firms and consultants for specialised cases.

The Firm continues to work with various bodies, including the ‘Designated Authority,’ the Appellate Tribunal, High Courts of various Indian states under their writ jurisdiction and the Supreme Court of India. The Firm’s practice covers all facets of WTO developments, including trade negotiations and dispute settlement proceedings. The Firm’s lawyers have represented the Government of India (GoI) in a World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute before the WTO Panel and the Appellate Body in Geneva.

Our work includes:

  • Trade Remedies: antidumping, countervailing duty, safeguard and other trade remedy proceedings before the Indian ‘Designated Authority’
  • Trade Policy: using bilateral Free Trade Agreements (‘FTAs’) to garner greater market access or protect domestic industry, through inclusion in the ‘early harvest’ list, sensitive list, and positive list
  • WTO Dispute Settlement: disputes under the WTO dispute settlement system, as well as bilateral FTAs
  • Generalized Scheme of Preference (‘GSP’): making representations before the United States GSP Sub-committee and the United States Department of Commerce
  • Product regulation, health, industrial and environmental standards and food and drug safety
  • Advising on trade in services related issues and the WTO General Agreement on Trade in Services
