Punjab Government Exempts Factories From Certain Provisions of Factories Act

The Government of Punjab by way of Notification dated September 20, 2023, exempted factories from certain provisions of the Factories Act, 1948, in relation to the weekly hours of work, weekly holidays, daily hours, and spread over. This exemption is subject to fulfillment of certain conditions which include, inter alia, that (i) the total number of hours of work in any day should not exceed 12 hours; (ii) the spread over, inclusive of interval for rest should not exceed 13 hours in any one day; (iii) the total hours of work in any week including overtime, should not exceed 60 hours; and (iv) no worker should be allowed to work overtime for more than seven days at a stretch, and the total number of hours of overtime work in any quarter should not exceed 115 hours.
