RBI Allows Banks and Non-Bank PPI Issuers to Issue PPIs for Mass Transit System

The RBI has, by way of Circular dated February 23, 2024, amended the RBI Master Directions on Prepaid Payment Instruments, 2021 (MD-PPIs, 2021) to permit authorised bank and non-bank prepaid payment instrument (‘PPI’) issuers to issue PPIs for making payments across various public transport systems. These PPIs will be enabled only for payments across various modes of public transport such as metro, buses, rail, & waterways, tolls and parking and the amounts outstanding in such PPI cannot exceed INR 3000 (approx. US$ 35).
