DoT Issues Notification of Critical Telecommunication Infrastructure and Framework on Critical Services in M2M/IoT Sector

The DoT has:

i.    by way of a Notification dated July 16, 2025, and pursuant to powers conferred upon it under Section 22(3) of the Telecom Act, notified certain parts of a telecommunication network in a telecommunication service as critical telecommunication infrastructure. Accordingly, telecommunication entities will be required to adhere to additional compliances in relation to the notified critical telecommunication infrastructure(s) as prescribed under the Telecommunications (Critical Telecommunication Infrastructure) Rules, 2024; and

ii.   pursuant to an Office Memorandum dated July 29, 2025, issued the Framework and Guidelines for Classification of Critical Services in the M2M/IoT Sector which provides for a twin criteria for the classicisation of a service application as critical service. As per this framework, the entire domain/sector need not be classified as a critical M2M/IoT sector but the specific services within each domain will be assessed to identify the critical M2M/ IoT services.
