DoT Notifies Amendment to Telecommunication Rules

The DoT has, by way of a Gazette Notification dared September 12, 2025, notified the Telecommunications (Procedures and Safeguards for Lawful Interception of Messages) Amendment Rules, 2025 which, inter alia, redefine ‘Competent Authority’ (which can issue lawful interception orders) to include the Union Home Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Central Government as the competent authority in case of a request from the Secretary in-charge of the Home Department of the State Government to the Central Government for interception by that State Government beyond its territorial jurisdiction.
